Throwing in the Towel

Mothers…grandmothers…anyone who is sharing a space with a toddler child…have you ever had a moment when you just wanted to throw in the towel? The stress of the day, the pile of things to do, and everything seeming to go wrong, and than the one little thing that finally breaks the straw? That one thing that finally gets you down on your knees, in desperation, begging God, “I can’t do this anymore. Please, help me!”

If you are in this moment, or you’re in a place that looks as though you’re about to get there, I’m right where you are. Over and over I have asked God Where are we going next? God, don’t you see me? Aren’t you listening to my pleas and cries of anguish? How long must I endure this road?

A dear friend of ours at church said this to my husband and I recently that made me stop in my tracks and go, “Whoa.”

“When you’re down to nothing, God is up to something.”

When you are in a place of hitting rock bottom, or trying to find every solution under the sun and coming up with nothing, there is nowhere to go but back to God, the solution to all our problems and every problem on earth. He reminds me in 2 Corinthians 12:9: “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness’. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

Right now, I am in the weakest place that I can be. I can’t rely on my own strength, because I come up short. The amazing thing is, when we accept our weaknesses and hand it over to God, that is when God can really start working. Only when we step out of the way do things really begin working for our good.

So, those of you who are about to throw in the towel, let’s throw in the towel of our control and our anxious hearts and hand our weaknesses over to God! Let’s unite in prayer with others who are in similar situations, or others who can really encourage you in this time of restlessness.

And don’t stop praying and asking God for help and direction. When it seems like you want to throw in the towel, I just encourage you, keep asking God again and again.

For He is up to something…something truly wonderful and good.

Tips that are helping me during this time (not in order):

1. Prayer from spiritual leaders and friends from church/prayer from those who we trust will help encourage us as we walk through this stormy time

2. Sitting still and yielding to God’s plan/taking the time to hear from God

3. Taking the time to find the goodness of God in everything/being thankful

4. Being willing to step out into any situation that we feel is from God, even if it looks impossible

5. Digging deep into God’s Word and finding strength from it

6. Receiving God’s promises and truth into our hearts, even if it comes from other people/receiving prophesies and visions about our situation

7. A lot of worship and praise through this time, and every season of life!
